ABOUT LOREN MARSHALL
Loren was born April 30, 1953 and grew up in Missoula, Montana. After high school, he attended Harvard University, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in English. He traveled and lived in the Pacific Northwest where he became interested in EMT training after taking an advanced first aid class in 1977 while working with the ski patrol in Colorado. Loren eventually made his way to Anchorage in the summer of 1978. In 1980, he married Beckie Brocies, and began his paramedic training at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.
After returning to Anchorage, Loren worked at the Southern Region Emergency Medical Services Council in 1981 and 1982, training EMS responders in the rural areas of Southcentral Alaska. During that time, he also co-authored the Alaska Air Medical Escort Training Manual as well as the first EMT-Intermediate textbook, which went on to be used at a national level. Loren became a line paramedic for the Anchorage Fire Department in 1982 and rose through the ranks to the position of Battalion Chief of EMS Training.
In 1994, he retired from the Anchorage Fire Department to work as a developmental editor, specializing in medical textbooks. His company, Treeline Writers Group, coordinated the first revision of the Community Health Aide Manual for the state of Alaska. During this time Loren also served on the Municipality of Anchorage’s Public Safety Commission.
Over the years Loren authored numerous articles on prehospital emergency medicine and became a longtime article reviewer and consulting editor for JEMS magazine. In 1987, Loren was chosen as one of the Outstanding Young Men in America and named to Who’s Who in American Writers, Editors, and Poets in 1989.
Loren died March 18, 2005, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle of complications resulting from his courageous battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A friend wrote: “Some of us were blessed with the opportunity to work and train with Loren, and countless more have benefited from the work he did and passed along. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a soft-spoken, kind and gentle soul with a quick wit, known to many as a friend.”
